Getting to Know My Camera

I have upgraded my camera twice on my blogging journey.
We got a Nikon d5200 before we went to Alaska
It's a great camera.
I got to know it a little at first but developed a bad habit of shooting in auto when I was frustrated or when the lighting wasn't just right.

I used the same buttons over and over again.
With the recent time change, I was frustration once again over lack of light.

It's dark in here...
I've got to be home during the day to take pictures.
It's already too dark by the time I get home from school.
I went back to the drawing board to try to learn more about my camera.

I knew a little about ISO but I didn't know much about f-stop or shutter speed.
How do you get a blurrier background?

I'll let you in on a secret, which may not be that much of a secret.
I set f-stop and shutter speed according to what one blogger said was used most often and left them alone or used auto.

I did a lot of editing in iPhoto which isn't the best program.
Just saying...

Yes, that is some pink showing up around here.

Christmas is not staying yet but some of it did come out the other day for photos.
Have you had camera frustrations?
Why didn't I go take a class?

Thanks to the internet, I'm figuring some stuff out.
It's about time!
Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Camera woes here too. I have a Canon T3i. It's awesome and I'm inept. The great pictures that I do end up with are by complete accident. I'm taking a class at the Dallas Arboretum next Thursday at 6 if you want to come. :)

  3. I don't have time to practice much, but I took the on-line course "Shoot Fly Shoot" (The Lettered Cottage) and I highly recommend it for learning the basics on how to use your SLR. It's broken up into several videos so you can practice each setting as you learn. I took several years of photography in high school, but I didn't remember much about shutter speed, etc. I also took a community ed class that was a complete waste of time.....too many people and too wide a range of experience to get any individual help. Have fun!

  4. Hi Katie,
I have pretty good luck with using auto on my camera and then I use Pic Monkey to edit and that works pretty good.
I might have to check out that on line course that Vickie suggested. I need to learn more about my camera too.

  5. Hello Katie,

Great job with the photos. I purchased the same camera a year ago and I am still learning how to use it but I do love the quality of the images that it takes. You tube is a great source for learning. It has a ton of how to videos. I am actually thinking of taking a photography course.

    Have fun using it.

  6. Katie, the roses are gorgeous and I love the brown pitcher! I am terrible. I never take the time to learn about my camera and always shoot in auto. I oohh and ahhh and some people's photography, but never seem to find the time to learn! I think you do a great job. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  7. I'm still learning how to use my camera, after having it over a year. I use "P" (Program) instead of "A" (Auto), because that way, I have the ability to adjust the light meter, but everything else is automatic. I need a lot more lessons!
