New Lining For Vintage Louis Vuitton

I got this vintage Louis Vuitton off of eBay.

The lining for this bag was just gross.
The lining material called Vuittonitte gets sticky in humid climates over time.

It leaves a white, sticky residue on anything that it touches.

I was able to clean it the first season I had it but I don't want to mess with it anymore.
To find out what to do, I went to my favorite place to read about handbags, shoes and jewelry.
I visited the site to know what an authentic L.V. Petite  Bucket Bag looks like
and to know what to do or not do to repair it.
I always thought I would send it off to Louis Vuitton to get the lining replaced but it costs roughly $100 which is more than I want to invest in this bag.
I could take it to my cobbler to get a new lining but I decided to make my own lining for it.
I went to my fabric closet and found two cute reds.
I had the fabric left over from my apple making project. Here.

The red one looked better with the Vera Bradley accessories that I use.

This one looked cuter peeking out of the bag.
I set my bag on the fabric to trace the oval for the bottom.
Make sure you do not touch a pencil or pen to the Vachetta leather. It will not come out.

I sewed a large rectangle of fabric to the oval.

This bag is one of the few older bags that have two pockets. A lot of the older ones don't have enough pockets for a cell phone.

I made two little self-lined pockets by folding two rectangles in half and sewing them right sides together.
Make sure to leave a small opening to turn them right side out.

This is just like making a pillow only smaller.
I had to hand stitch the new lining to the top of the old lining.

I know there are thoughts and opinions back and forth about this designer.
I have always been drawn to this pattern just as I am drawn to other things vintage.

This pattern has been around since 1854 and it is one of the most counterfeited patterns in the world.

Which is why I did so much research before I bought the bag.

To me this is a classic.
The monogram pattern may go in and out of style but it has been a staple of wardrobes for generations.

I love seeing the floral peaking up out of the bag.
It's cheerful.

What do you think?
Love L.V. or hate it?

Since I did this project, I've heard that people have had success sprinkling talcum powder on the lining and working it in. Others have had success washing the lining with an Orange cleaner. I hope this helps.
Update: I have since used orange cleaner on the original lining.
It was a nightmare and I ended up restitching my homemade lining back into the bag.
I have also read that Louis Vuitton will no longer work on any bags without a receipt
Thanks for stopping in.

    1. I had one too about 26 years ago. I donated it. I don't know if that one was authentic. I would love to have a Gucci Dr. bag. Thanks for stopping in. :)

  3. I am admittedly a big LV fan! Your new lining looks great -- it is now a 'one of a kind' LV which sets it apart from all the rest. I bet people will think it is a limited edition!

    1. Haha. I do like it. I think it would be fun to do to any purse that has a less than spectacular lining.

    1. The original lining is not glued to the L.V. canvas so I stitched through the old lining. Thanks for asking.
